William Knapp, of Newbern, was Instantly killed while walking along the Bluff Line track near his home. He was struck in the back by the- train that arrives here at (1:30 p. in., going to St. Louis) and the accident was reported here on the arrival of the train. Knapp was walking along the track on his way from the postoffice to his home. The track crosses his farm about one mile from Knapp's home and passes through a deep cut at which there is a sharp curvc. Knapp was carrying a dog in his arm and was walking through the cut when the two were struck. He was killed Instantly. It Is probable the man did not hear the approaching train because of the curve and the high banks on both sides of the track. His body was thrown clear of the track and was not mangled. Knapp was 60 years of age and had boon a resident tf Jersey county almost 40 years. He was the father-ln-law of Sheriff Cosmos Keller, of Jersey county, and was one of the wellknown characters of the county.
