ROCK VALLEY, Iowa - Elizabeth Geraldine Paekel, 81, of Rock Valley, formerly of Orange City, Iowa, died Friday, March 24, 2000, at a Sioux City hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at First Reformed Church in Orange City, with the Revs. Steven Vander Molen and Paul Colenbrander officiating. Burial will be in West Lawn Cemetery. Visitation will be after 2 p.m. today, with the family present 6:30 to 8 p.m., at Oolman Funeral Home in Orange City.

Mrs. Paekel was born May 12, 1918, in Rock Valley, the daughter of the Rev. Henry and Fannie (Kooiker) Colenbrander. At the age of eight years she moved to Orange City with her family. She attended Northwestern Junior College in Orange City and graduated from Central College in Pella. She then taught in country schools for four years and in the Hull Public Junior and Senior High School for 12 years.

She married Harold Richard Paekel on July 15, 1948, in Orange City. They made their home in Orange City, and in her later years she assisted her husband in the operation of De Vries Transfer. She also did substitute teaching in the area schools. Her husband died Jan. 24, 1996. In July 1998 she became a resident of Valley Manor in Rock Valley.

She was a longtime member of First Reformed Church in Orange City, where she served as an organist and a Sunday school teacher for many years. She was also active in the women's organizations of the church.

Survivors include a daughter and her husband, Beth and John Johnson of Rock Valley; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Mark; a sister and her husband, Frances and Arnold Vermeer of Sioux Center; and a brother, the Rev. Paul Colenbrander of Holland, Mich.

She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Krista Beth; and a brother, the Rev. Harold Colenbrander.
