Joseph Carl Okes, 68, of Shady Spring, died Monday, April 4, 1999, at his home following a long illness.
Born May 1, 1930, at Ellison Ridge, Mercer County, he was the son of the late Clarence Okes and Elizabeth Wills Okes.
Mr. Okes was a retired employee of Westmoreland Coal Co., a member of the UMWA and a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean Conflict. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, just being in the country. Mr. Okes was a 43-year resident of Shady Spring and was of the Baptist faith.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Kermit, Lonnie and Clinton Okes.
Survivors include his wife of 45 years, Lee Ann Lilly Okes; three sons, Joseph Paul Okes, Dennis Carl Okes and Timothy Ray Okes and his wife, Melissa, all of Shady Spring; a daughter, Regina Ann Groves and her husband, Stephen, of Shady Spring; a brother, Cecil Okes of Nimitz; six sisters, Alice Basham of Jumping Branch, Mary Dorsey of Ghent, Catherine Dameron of Piney View, Pansey Ellison of Hopewell, Va., and Estelle Thompson and Lullabelle Okes, both of Nimitz; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Services will be 1 p.m. Friday at Rose and Quesenberry Shady Spring Chapel with the Revs. George Smith and Clayton Lilly officiating.
Burial will follow in Dunns Cemetery, Dunns. Military graveside rites will be conducted by Sophia-Midway VFW Post No. 4326.
Friends may call 6 to 9 p.m. today at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be Timothy Okes, Joseph P. Okes, Dennis Okes, Johnny Way, Adam Groves and Stephen Groves. Arrangements by Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring.
