John W. (Jack) Harbach Sr., 83, of Williamsport, passed away Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012, at the Gatehouse at Divine Providence Hospital.

He was born Sept. 30, 1928, in Lewistown, a son of the late Alva Glenn and Emma Frankenberger Harbach.

In 1940 the family returned to its native home of Sugar Valley.

John was married May 31, 1954, in Williamsport to the former Gloria M. Schadt of Castanea, by the Rev. Dr. Alfred J. Thomas.

He graduated from the Sugar Valley High School in 1947 and from the Williamsport Area Community College.

John was a veteran of the US Army and served during the Korean Conflict.

He retired in 1983 from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he was employed as a soil conservation technician.

John was an avid hunter, gardener and genealogist.

He was a member of the Korean War Veterans of Lycoming County, the National Rifle Association, the Clinton County Genealogical Society, the Centre County Genealogical Society, the Lycoming County Genealogical Society, and the Sugar Valley Historical Society.

He spent many years collecting and identifying Sugar Valley photos. This culminated in 2011 with the publication of Sugar Valley Villages, which he co-authored with David I. Kagan.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather.

He is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gloria M. Harbach,; his daughters, Cinthia M. (Eugene) Fairbanks of Granville, N.Y., Joyce E. (Jack) Diehl of Williamsport; his son John W. (Lynn) Harbach Jr., of Waldorf, Md.; and his beloved granddaughters, Shannon J. Harbach, Megan M. Diehl, and Shelley J. Fairbanks. Also surviving are his brother-in-law, Robert R. Schadt of Castanea, and his sister-in-law, Mary Lee (Ted) Wentz, of Pennsylvania Furnace, as well as nephews Kevin (Debbie) and Kerry Mark and Ronald (Jeanne) Gettys.

He was predeceased by his siblings, Philip E. Harbach, LaRue C. Harbach, Adeline J. Robison, Barbara A. Gettys and Elaine K. Harbach.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the Dean K. Wetzler Jr. Funeral Home, 320 Main St., Mill Hall, with Chaplain Rebecca Logan officiating. Burial will be in the Cedar Hill Cemetery in Mill Hall.

Friends will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, at the funeral home.

The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the Sugar Valley Historical Society, PO Box 62, Loganton, PA, 17747, or a charity of your choice.
