Ebenezer Lamphere Lake was the son of Joseph Lake & Ruth (Lamphere) Lake.

Ebenezer by his wife Betsy he had two daughters:

Jane & Emma.

Emma married a Mr Feighner.

Jane married Frank J Hawkins, son of Julius Jay Hawkins and Sarah Bell (Davis) Hawkins.

I don't know much about Emma, but here is what I have been told about Jane...

Jane & Frank J were planing on moving to Kansas. Jane gave birth to her daughter Carrie en route. She then wanted to go back to Michigan with the children. So she took the their two children back home (Alda & Carrie). She died soon afer that and so the children were escorted to Kansas to be with their dad.

The following information was provided by Kathleen:

I have a copy of the letter that Lydia Shields (Mrs. W. H. Shields) wrote to Carrie Hawkins O'Hara (my grandmother) and Ebenezer's granddaughter aboaut Ebenezer death. Lydia writes that the weather was bad so they were unable to bury Ebenezer in Odessa but buried him in Vermontville. But I can't find his gravesite. Odessa is where I think that his wife, Betsy Lake (d. 1873), was buried -- but I can't find her or their daughter, Jane Lake Hawkins (d. 1874). or another daughter, Emma Lake Feighener/Feighner (d. 1873)

I do not know W. H Shields or Lydia Shields -- but she starts the letter out as Cousin Carrie....

But I may have found an unnamed child of Emma Feighener. There is an infant Feighner buried in Barryville Cemetery, Barry County, MI - b. Aug 22, 1870 and died Oct 5, 1870.

My old notes said that a child of Emma Feighener-- "Our Babe" was born August 21st, 1870 and died Oct 6th, 1870.

I think that the copied page I have may have been written by Ebenezer in 1909 -- and he wrote Feighener -- not Feighner...

The following information was provided by Jon:

Ebenezer's parents were Joseph and Ruth Lamphere Lake. At the time of Ebenezer's birth they lived in or near Duanesburg, Schenectady Co NY.

In 1820 Joseph is listed with 3 males younger than 10, 1 male 10 - 15, 1 male 16 -18, 2 males 18 -25, and 1 male over 45; 2 females under 10, 3 females 10-15, 1 female 26-44.

In 1840 Joseph is between 60 & 70 and is living with 5 females.

In 1850 Joseph is farming, living in Duanesburg, and his age is 77 making his birth approx. 1773. In 1850 Ruth is 64 and Catherine 21 and Julia Ann 20 are living with them. Joseph died 22 Feb 1859 age 85 and is buried in White Cemetery near Duanesburg .

In 1860 Ruth was living with her daughter Julia and son in law in Duanesburg.

(In the 1900 Census Ebenezer lists his father's birthplace at Rhode Island)

Ebenezer Lake was born March 12, 1816 and we know little of his early years. He married Betsy (Yaw) date unknown. Betsy was born Oct 11, 1815 in Albany, New York. They had 2 children. Our hand written record states that Emma was born July 4, 1848 at Farmington, Ontario Co. NY. Jane was born Nov 21, 1849 also at Farmington which is southeast of Monroe Co. In the 1850 Census they were living in Monroe Co. NY in Periton Twp. Emma is 3 and Jane 6 months old. Ebenezer was listed as a laborer. Mary Yaw age 74 (presumably Betsy's mother) is living with them. The hand written record states that Ebenezer came to Michigan on Oct 12, 1853 to Vermontville. It says he built a log house in the woods in April 1854. It goes on to say that the house is still standing and used now for a tool house and owned by A.D. Lake. (At the bottom of the hand written record it states Written Nov 5th 1909.)

In 1860 Ebenezer, Betsy and the girls are living near John L Lake in Vermontville, Eaton CO. Ebenezer is a farmer and his land is valued at $500 and personal estate at $50. John L is 56, also a farmer and married to Lydia (Gage) age 54 and they have 3 children living at home. His real estate is valued at $1000 and personal estate at $700.

(John L Lake is the father of Benjamin and Alexander Lake and is likely a brother of Ebenezer because in later census Ebenezer is living with Benjamin and is listed as uncle. In 1850 John L Lake is living in Galen, Wayne, Co NY just north of Monroe Co. and is listed as a laborer. Benjamin 21 and Alexander 18 are living with John and Lydia.)

By 1870 Ebenezer and Betsy are living alone in Odessa in Ionia, Co. MI. The next years turn out to be very difficult for the family. Betsy died April 19, 1873 at Odessa. Their daughter Emma was married to Jeremiah Feighener/Feighner age 22 on April 7, 1867 in Odessa. They had 2 children, Our Babe born Aug 21 1870, died Oct 6 1870 and Philip L Feighener born May 17 187? died Jan 26 1873. Emma died about a month later on Feb 21 aged 24 years 7 months and 17 days at Odessa MI.

Jane Lake married Frank J. Hawkins on Sept 26, 1867 at Charlotte, Eaton Co. MI. They had 2 children, Alda born June 7, 1868 in Vermontville and Carrie born July 17, 1871 in Clarksburg, MO on the way to KS. Jane returned to MI and died on August 21, 1874 at Odessa. Therefore Ebenezer lost all his immediate family except two young grandchildren Alda and Carrie. They were sent to Kansas to live with their father and Hawkins grandparents. (There is a double connection to the Hawkins family, Frank and Jane and Alexander D Lake and Laura E Hawkins. Laura was the daughter of Moses Lindsey Hawkins & Elizabeth Owen. Moses was Frank's uncle.)

Ebenezer apparently remarried in April 1876 to an Elizabeth Gage in Middleville, Barry Co., MI. She died July 26 1886 in Barry Co. and was listed as a widow. In 1880 an Ebenezer Lake was living with and working for a Katy Hytt/Hyatt in Ionia, Co. He was listed as divorced, as Katy was, so this likely was our Ebenezer whose second marriage didn't work out.

We haven't found Ebenezer in 1890 as the census records for Kansas and Michigan along with others were burned. However, in 1895 he is listed with his granddaughter Carrie O'Hara and her husband Hugh in Reno Co. KS. In 1900 he is living with his nephew Benjamin Lake in Vermontville.

In 1909 the Hastings Banner published a nice letter from J.E. Lake, Ebenezer's great nephew, who he was living with. The article is as follows, "Mr. Ebenezer L. Lake, of Nashville, was a voter in the spring of '37. He voted for Harrison in '40 and '44 when the anti-slavery or Liberal party was organized with James G Burney of this state in nomination for president. He voted that ticket till '52. Since '54 when the Republican Party was organized and elected Kingsley S Ingham the first governor elected by that ticket, he has continued to vote that ticket straight without scratching a name from it. He voted for the famous Lincoln. Mr. Lake's grandfather, John Lamphere was a soldier in the revolution, holding a captain's commission. Mr. Lake was 93 on the 12th of March. He is hale and hearty for his age; in full possession of his mental facilities. He reads the paper, takes interest in public affairs and writes letters to his friends.

In 1910 Ebenezer is living with William Shields and wife Lydia in Maple Grove, Barry Co., MI. He is listed at boarder/ward. Ebenezer died Jan 7, 1912. We have a nice letter to Cousin Carrie O'Hara from Lydia Shields dated 4 February from Nashville. She said Ebenezer was buried in Vermontville because of bad weather rather than in Odessa where Betsy was buried. She told of Ebenezer's last days and offered to send his trunk and bibles to Carrie. We are not sure how she was related. Ebenezer had a long and eventful life which was visited with many hardships and sad occasions but apparently he remained positive. Lydia said in her letter that he, "seemed to enjoy living better than half the young people do, he was always so jolly".

One letter to his granddaughter Carrie and her children apparently written in 1911 thanks Esther (one of Carrie's daughters) for her good letter and tells them that he is interested in their welfare. He ends the letter, ‘with love and kisses to all good bye and may God bless, be with and comfort you while life lasts your Loving grandpa Lake'. He then adds ‘my pen is poor my ink pale my love for you will never fail'.
