Funeral services Ira Joseph Wiant, 86, were held at 1:30 p.m. on Aug. 22, at the Saratoga Cemetery Pavilion at Saratoga, Wyo., with Pastor Glen Murray officiating.

Interment was, August 23 in the Wheatland Cemetery at Wheatland, with graveside rites conducted by the Independent Order of Odd Fellows.

Mr. Wiant died Tues., Aug. 19, at Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland.

Ira was born March 15, 1917 in Saratoga, the son of Ira Goff and Ellen Frances (Fritzgerald) Wiant.

He was reared and educated in Saratoga where he graduated from high school. He attended the University of Wyoming for a year and a half and then served in the United States Army for four and a half years. He held the rank of Captain upon his discharge, Dec. 27, 1946. He returned to Saratoga after the service and started ranching and milking cows with his brother. On May 17, 1958, he married Mary A. Hammer at Encampment.

He continued ranching until 1961 when he began working for the Highway Department in Rawlins, Wyoming. In 1963, he began working for the U.S. Forest Service as an engineer and retired in 1984.

He and his wife moved to Wheatland in 1986. They spent summers in Encampment and winters in Wheatland until ill health in recent years and they sold their Encampment home. Ira was a lifetime member of Independent Order of Odd Fellows and Lion's Club of Encampment. He was an avid reader and enjoyed bowling.

Ira is survived by his wife, Mary of Wheatland; a daughter, Judy and husband, Bill Windmeier of Wheatland; brother, Clyde Wiant of Escondido, Calif.; two grandchildren, Zane Morris of Wheatland and Jill Tyler of Lombard, Ill.; and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Mary Jenkins.

Serving as pallbearers will be members of his family. Honorary pallbearers will be his many friends.

Memorials to Platte County 4-H Program, 56 Antelope Gap Road, Wheatland, WY 82201 would be appreciated by the family.
