A Memorial Mass will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, August 20, 2010 at St. Hyacinths Church in LaSalle with Rev. Adam Stimpson officiating. Private burial will be in St. Vincent Cemetery. Visitation will be held in the church on Friday from 9:30 AM until the time of services. Arrangements are through Mueller and Pagani Funeral Home in LaSalle.
Mrs. Appel was born November 12, 1919 in Lebanon, WI, a daughter of Anton and Clara (Ebert) Berg. She graduated from Watertown High School in Watertown, WI. She married Joseph E. Appel on November 12, 1947 at St. Henry Church in Watertown, WI. He died March 19, 2008.
Survivors include three children, Mary (Garrett) McGuire of Elwood, Josef (Judy Munda) Appell of Freeport and Jo Ann (the late Don Owcarz) Appel of Galesburg; nine grandchildren, Kimberly (Bruce) Nay, Jay (Dawn) McGuire, Jill (Spike) Berscheid, Julie (Joe) McElyea, Michelle (Jason) Blacketer, Stephenie Appell, Jennifer Owens, Amanda McGuire and Jason Appell; 18 great-grandchidren, Alyssa, Zachary, Kayla and Kelly Nay, Emma and Elana McGuire, Garrett, Jonathon and Mason Berscheid, Bria and Lucas McElyea, Kelsey, Benjamin and Ashley Blacketer, Kyrsten Appell, Hunter Owens, and Amelia and Alaura Appell and her brother-in-law, Robert (the late Marian) Appel of Carmi.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Joseph; her sister, Clara (Alvin) Boje and her brothers, Anthony (Helen) and William (Cecelia) Berg.
Mrs. Appel was the bookkeeper for Joseph Appel Trucking for 40 years. She was a member of St. Hyacinths Church in LaSalle and previously Resurrection Church where she was a member of the Altar and Rosary Society. She was also a member of the Heart of the Community Senior Center. Eleanor enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing cards, bus trips to casinos, traveling, and dancing to polka music.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Will County Humane Shelter for Animals, c/o Mary McGuire, 24756 W. Hemphill Dr., Elwood, IL 60421, would be appreciated as Eleanor loved her Fluffy and Lassie and feeding the birds.
