Edwin J. Smith, resident of San Mateo, passed away Saturday, February 19, 2011 at 92. A native of Chicago, Illinois he was a resident of San Mateo since 1949. Survived by his niece Lurae Fuller and husband Richard, great-niece Jennifer Fuller, great-nephew Michael and wife Melissa Fuller, and two great-great-nieces. Preceded in death by his sister Lucille Peterson in 2004. Edwin was born in Chicago on September 20, 1918. He entered the Navy in 1943 and served as Hospital Apprentice lst Class until 1946, where he learned his trade of dental technician. He worked for Empire Dental Lab in San Francisco until his retirement in 1985. Uncle Ed was a kind, gentle soul who always had a joke to tell. He was an animal lover and a sports fan following the SF Giants, Chicago Cubs, and the 49ers. Private services were held.
