Leo Sylvester DeLong, son of Edward and Rachel Baker DeLong was born in Perry County, Ohio, August 20, 1883, and came to Iowa the age of nine years with his parents, locating in Washington county. Three years later they moved to Mahaska county, where he lived with his parents until his father's death, when in company with his brothers Daniel and Edward, he emigrated to California in the year 1853, making the trip with oxen.
He spent seven years among the lumber mills and gold fields of the far west, when he was called back to Iowa to the bedside of his aged mother, who passed away in a few weeks. March 4, 1862, he was married to Miss Mary Patrick who after nearly fifty-two years of wedded life is left behind. To them were born two sons, Morgan S. and Leo C., and two daughters, Mrs. Ella Hoit and Mrs. Adah Hoit. There are also ten grandchildren.
For the past three years his health has been poor and since January he has been confined to the house. For the last several weeks he had known that the end was near, and at length on Wednesday, May 14, 1913, he peacefully breathed his last, at the ripe age of 79 years, 8 months and 14 days.
