John Spellman served in Company G, 115th Illinois Infantry which mustered in at Ft. Butler, one of the largest training camps during the Civil War located about 5.5. miles W/E of Springfield, Illinois. It is now a National Cemetery. After the fall of Ft. Donaldson, a Confederate fort located on the Cumberland River near Dover Tennessee, Camp Butler became a prisoner of war prison.
The regiment fought in numerous battles and suffered the lose of 213 soldiers during its service. Sixty-four were killed in action or died due to mortal injuries. The remaining 149 died of disease,
