Thomas was a volunteer in the Iowa Infantry, Corporal Co. C, 33 Regiment. He was enlisted into service August 10, 1862; discharged July 17, 1865 in New Oreleans Lousiana, having served three years. He filed for a pension which he received. The pension file shows he was 5 ft. 7 1/2 Inches tall; light complexion; brown eyes; brown hair.

Thomas married first to Elizabeth Alice Remington on September 27, 1860 in Mahaska County, Iowa. They had one daughter Alice DeLong born September 25, 1861. Elizabeth Alice Remington DeLong died April 1, 1871 in Afton, Union County, Iowa. He married second to Susan Ellen Meyers December 9, 1884 in Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie County, Iowa. They had one child, Essie L. born April 1, 1890.

Thomas and his sister Elizabeth DeLong of Mahaska County (this would be Cecilia Elizabeth DeLong) signed a deed on November 30, 1860 transferring title to land from thier father's estate to brothers Leo Sylvester and Edward Fenwick DeLong.
