Poet Laureate of England. He began writing poetry as a teenager and eventually published eleven volumes of poetry as well as several children's books and acclaimed translations. He married the poet Sylvia Plath in June 1956 and had two children with her, Frieda and Nicholas. They separated in 1962 and Plath committed suicide in February 1963. He also had a daughter, Shura, with Assia Wevill, the woman for whom he left Plath; Wevill killed herself and Shura in 1969. Hughes won many awards for his work and was appointed Poet Laureate in 1984. With his last volume of poetry, "Birthday Letters," he finally broke his silence about his marriage to and the death of Sylvia Plath. He was cremated with only his close family in attendance, and his ashes were scattered at a remote location on Dartmoor, close to the source of the River Taw. A public memorial service was held in Westminster Abbey on May 13, 1999.
