Retired Kay Farmer Dies
Newkirk - Fred Elmer Ames, who farmed 50 years in the Newkirk community and drove a chuck wagon in the Cherokee Strip run, died early Friday morning in the Ponca City hospital where he had been a patient six days. His home was at 216 N. Chestnut, Newkirk, where he had lived since his retirement.
Born Dec. 2, 1877, at Elk City, Kansas, he was the son of Jasper and Amanda Ames. He moved to Arkansas City while quite young and received his education here. He made the Cherokee Strip run at the age of 15, driving a chuck wagon and his father staked a claim northeast of Newkirk.
Fred Ames and Nellie Wheeler were married Oct. 28, 1903, at Bartlesville, and Ames farmed for more than 50 years in the vicinity of Newkirk and Arkansas City.
Survivors include his wife of the home in Newkirk; four daughters, Mrs. J.F. (Opal) Campbell, 226 N. Seventh St., Arkansas City; Mrs. J.E. (Bernice) Schevermann, Vandervoort, Ark., Mrs. Ben (Delores) Hess, Kaw City, and Mrs. William (Dorothy) George, Selma, Calif.; two sons, D.J. Ames and William Howard Ames, both of Newkirk; 20 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be Monday 2 p.m. in the Baptist church at Newkirk with the Rev. James Weston officiating. Burial will be in the Newkirk cemetery with the Boatright-Weber Funeral Home in charge.
