Princess. Matilde d'Este, daughter of Francesco III d'Este, Duke of Modena and Reggio, and his wife Charlotte Aglaé d'Orléans, was born in Genoa. Her mother Charlotte was the granddaughter of King Louis XIV of France and his mistress Madame de Montespan. Her parents' marriage was not a happy one and they separated. Her sister Maria Teresa had married the Duke of Penthièvre, one of the wealthiest men in Europe. When her sister died in 1754, her mother Charlotte tried to arrange a marriage between Matilde and the Duke. However, the grieving widower declined and never remarried. Matilde remained unmarried. She died in 1803 and was interred in the chapel of the Convent of the Visitation in Venice. At least two of her siblings are buried there as well.
