Our loving mother, Mattie J. Grant, 98, had a peaceful homecoming on Friday September 3, 2010. In keeping with our mothers' wishes, funeral and burial arrangements are under the direction of Lakeview Funeral Home. Rev. Alton Davis of the Progressive Church in Gladewater will conduct services.

Mother Grant, as she was affectionately known, was born on September 16, 1911 in the Mayflower community of Rusk County. After attending school in Mayflower, she went to vocational training and worked as a nurse and dietician at Gregg Memorial Hospital and Markham Hospital between giving birth to 14 children of which 8 survived birth. Mother Grant wore many hats over her nearly a century on this earth, but she was most proud of being a Missionary and Evangelist. She loved the Lord and her life centered on being a humble servant, and teaching the goodness of Jesus Christ. She was a faithful member of Skinner Temple Church of God In Christ.

Mother Grant loved to cook and shell peas on the front porch with her church sisters. Her chicken and dressing, cakes and pies are legendary. Even when her children were grown and gone, she continued to cook like she was feeding an army and there were never any leftovers. When arthritis confined her to a wheelchair, she still continued to cook with the help of her many grand kids and great grand kids.

Mother Grant had four marital unions. Her first marriage was to Paul Beckworth of Longview, Texas, which produced a son and daughter, Lindley and Pauline. Her second union was to Calvin Hutchins Sr. of Orange, Texas and to this union one son, Calvin Junior, was born. Her third marriage was to Julius Grant of Longview, Texas of which 5 children were born. Her fourth marriage was to T.D. Crane of Longview, Texas.

She is preceded in death by her husbands and nine children. She is also preceded in death by siblings, Earlie Garner, Wesley Sanders, Winnie Dee Adair, Gladys Sanders, Clarence Hatcher and Randolph Sanders.

Left to mourn her passing and celebrate her life are five daughters; Marion, Juanita, Georgia, Sandra (Darnell) Washington, and Dyanne (Lewis) Sheppard aka The Grant Girls. Also mourning her death are two grandchildren she reared from birth, Wayne Grant and Truddy Grant and one adopted daughter Felicia Grant of Longview, Texas. Although Mother Grant has left this earthly realm and entered a heavenly home, her lineage will continue through numerous grand kids, great grand kids and great great grand kids, nieces, nephews, cousins, and first cousins. Mother Grant led a full and rich life.

Services will be held on Saturday, September 11, 2010 in the chapel of Lakeview Funeral Home at 1pm. Burial will immediately follow services at Lakeview Memorial Gardens. Memorial contributions may be made to Skinner Temple Church of God In Christ 301 Sabine Street Longview, Texas 75601 and flowers sent to the funeral home.
