Irene was an active 4-H member and was elected the first county president of the Palo Alto County girls 4-H in 1936.

On October 28, 1942 Irene married Lloyd Kelly in Assumption Catholic Church in Emmetsburg. To this union two daughters were born. Lloyd and Irene farmed east of Emmetsburg for five years and then near Ruthven for three years. They moved near Ayrshire where they farmed for thirty seven years.

She is survived by her daughters, Lori (Kelly) Nus of Telford, PA and Mary (Kelly) Thompson of Orange Park, FL; seven grandchildren, Lora Lynn Nus of Philadelphia, PA, Jana (Nus) Milz of Riverwoods, IL,Jason Nus of Telford, PA, Dr. Troy Thompson of Blacksburg, VA, Todd Thompson of Deerfield Beach, FL, Tracy Thompson of Orange Park, FL, and Trevor Thompson of Orange Park, FL; brothers, Leroy E. Irene lived in Iowa all of her life and in Palo Alto County all but the first three years of her married life. She was devoted to her family and friends and was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, cousin and friend. Irene loved life and some of the things she loved most were having her family reunions, making endless malts for her children and grandchildren, being snowed in, having company, being a 4-H member, going to church, farming with her beloved husband, Lloyd, living in Iowa, Christmas, anything lavender or purple, playing 500 and especially her dice game. She will be dearly missed by everyone who knew her.
