Beloved wife and mother, Mary Brewster Bamber, of Green Ridge Village, Newville, died Friday, February 10, 2012, after a sudden medical event. She was born April 30, 1923, in Oxford, England, the daughter of the late Rev. L. Mark and Ora (Wood) Brewster. She grew up in Connecticut and Maryland, where her father presided over different Episcopal churches.
She was a life long and devoted member of the Episcopal church, most recently at Trinity Church, Moorestown, NJ and St. John's in Carlisle, where she served as a member of the Altar Guild for many years.
Her education included Chaffee School in New Windsor, CT, Swarthmore College in Swarthmore, PA, where she received a bachelor degree and Drexel University where she earned a master's degree in Library Science, which she attained while raising her family. She worked as a reference librarian and then as an Assistant Director at the Cherry Hill (NJ) Library for many years. She was a proud US Navy veteran and member of the WAVES serving as communications officer in Washington, DC during World War II.
Mary is survived by her loving and devoted husband of 58 years, Lt. Col USA (Ret) William H. Bamber of Newville, her son, William E. Bamber II of Martinsburg, WV, her daughter, Elizabeth W. Bamber (and her husband, Clay Wilson) of Bainbridge Island, WA, a granddaughter, Sophia Diptee Wilson, her brother, James F. Brewster (and his wife, Deborah) of Sun Lakes, AZ, a nephew, Peter Brewster (and his wife, Anna) of Inwood, WV and nieces; Abigail Pope of Chandler, AZ, Melissa Gallinaro (and her husband, Cosmo) of Easton, MA and a sister-in-law, Ruth Bamber Million (and her husband, Gerry) of Sebring, FL. She will be deeply missed by her family and many friends.
As a member of a military family there were many moves including; various overseas and Stateside assignments. Green Ridge Village was selected as their retirement home, where she enjoyed the company of many good friends. Over the years, Mary's volunteer activities included helping at local historical societies, comforting cancer survivors, transporting seniors to medical appointments and tutoring elementary students in reading. Her most recent volunteer activities included the library and entertainment committees at Green Ridge. Mary's lifelong hobbies included travel, theater and opera, reading, knitting and antique shopping. She was a lover of plants and animals and always had a special family pet.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday, February 16, at St John's Episcopal Church, On the Square, Carlisle. A reception will follow in the Parish Hall. I turned up your e-mail address among her possessions and remembered that you had been in contact with her relating to family genealogy matters. She was stricken with a massive stroke on February 9th and died without regaining consciousness. A memorial service was held on February 16th at St. John's Episcopal Church in Carlisle, PA. She will be interred at St. Mark's Church Cemetery in Perryville, Maryland on April 19th.
