Born in Cocoa Fla in 1887, According to many of my family Mom as we called her was a pioneer woman Born in Cocoa Fl, in 1887. She was quite a self sufficient lady. In Valkaria she ran a boarding house and general store and post office close to the river and east of the railroad tracks which is now modern day US highway one in the middle of the road. That i where the house would have been. My Mom Corinne (1 of 7)was raised as a tomboy with her sisters and brothers on the Indian River.

Martha started out tough though. Her mom was out hanging cloths in the yard, and was bit by a rattle snake when Martha was 9 years old, because of no horse an buggy was to be had she held her mother in her arms while she passed away. what a way to start out as a child.

to her credit while living in Valkaria she was the first Female Postmaster in the state of Florida. Her husband died in the 1930's from a heart attack and she carried on working and taking care of her 7 children. She had several restaurants she opened up and sold. just before World war2 she moved to Fort Pierce and opened a seamstress shop on second street and ave A. Provided service to the First Amphibious training base NATB Fort Pierce. Her daughters spend many hours mending and sewing Uniforms for the sailors and Marines. My One Aunt met her Husband there. But that's another Story.
