Michael Joseph Beard, a fourth generation Sacramentan, is the son of Anne Medonich Beard and the late Robert Beard. He is the brother to Jeannette (David) Woodward and William Beard. He is the uncle to Lacie, Monica, and Tim.

He is the partner to Stephen Hatcher and ex-husband to Judy Karas.

Michael graduated from UC Davis as a mechanical engineer. He was a member of the Peace Corps in Uganda and Malaysia teaching mathematics and science. He had amazing stories from his time in 1971-1972 in the Peace Corps about the people and the work.

He attained his secondary teaching credential upon returning to the United States, but spent 33 years working at Crystal Cream and Butter from where he retired as the Vice President of Operations in 2007.

Michael volunteered with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Sacramento. Sharing hope and his love of education with young people was of vital importance to Michael. The dynamic leadership he exhibited with his team at Crystal was the same level of commitment he shared with young people.

He loved all outdoor activities including hiking, bicycling, and so much more. It was hard to find him sitting idly when there were so many things to do. His bicycles were his babies. He loved to read, travel, and spend time with those most important to him.

Michael died while riding up a steep hill on a bike ride with Stephen and another friend of theirs.

He will be sadly missed, but as his friend, John Fabish, said at the memorial, Michael resonated with the lyric from Neil Young, "It's better to burn out than fade away. Michael knew how to seize the day, and he did that until the last.

A memorial for Michael was held at the Roseville Theater, 241 Vernon Street, Roseville, CA 95678, where approximately 100 people attended to celebrate Michael's life on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at 1:00 PM. A beautiful photograph of Michael was on the stage next to Michael's favorite bicycle.

James Glica-Hernandez officiated and John Fabish was the guest speaker. A beautiful video tribute was created by Stephen for the event.
