Captain William Ashford served as a "cub pilot" on the Mississippi River at the same time as Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain). Ashford was originally from Carroll County Tennessee, and ran away from home to live with relatives at 12, because he was afraid of his father‘s punishment for swimming in the Mississippi River. Perpetually drawn to the river, Ashford piloted the Mississippi and White rivers while steamboating was at its peak.
