Our loving husband, father, grandfather, and friend, Lewis Charles Taylor passed away April 13, 2010, at his home in Springville, UT.
Lewis was born July 17, 1923 to George Edward and Elsie Margaret Larson Taylor in Fort Duchesne, Uintah County, Utah in the old military hospital. His early years were spent on ranches owned by the Larson and Taylor families in Randlett, Utah. He attended grade school in Hiawatha, Carbon County, Utah through the fifth grade and then returned to the Uintah Basin where he graduated from Roosevelt High School in 1942.
He served his country in World War II in the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions and fought in the Battle of the Bulge and the Battle of Bastogne, for which he received the Bronze Star. Dad also served as a member of Eisenhower's Honor Guard. After returning from the war, he attended BYU. Lewis married his sweetheart, Katherine Jackson in Vernal, Utah on Aug. 4, 1949. Their marriage was solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple in October of 1950. They made their home in Roosevelt, Utah where they raised their four children.
Lewis loved the Uintah Basin and always considered it home. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed fishing, hunting, and camping with friends and family. He especially enjoyed trips to Flaming Gorge, Lake Powell and Yellowstone. These adventures were always highlights of the year for him and the family. He took an active part in the community, serving in many different capacities. He was President of the Duchesne County School Board, Chamber of Commerce, Kiwanis Club, and the UBIC. He was an active member of the Church of Jesus of Christ of Latter-day Saints. He dedicated his life to serving his Savior. He served in a variety of church callings including high councils, and bishoprics in Roosevelt and Provo, as a Scoutmaster and a High Priest Group Leader. Together he and Katherine served missions to Jacksonville, Fla., the MTC in Provo, Utah and Kauai, Hawaii. He also served as an Ordinance worker at the Provo Temple for many years.
Lewis retired in 1983 from the US Postal Service and moved his family to Provo, Utah, to be closer to his beloved BYU Cougars. In 1993, Lewis and Katherine moved to Springville, Utah where he remained until his passing. They spent 61 wonderful years together. Lewis is survived by his devoted wife and four children; Tad, Gregg (Terri), Sue (Richard) Beveridge, and Tana (Rob) Davis; as well as his sister Barbara Kelly. The pride of his life was his 13 wonderful grandchildren.
We all miss him dearly, but are comforted by knowing we will be reunited with him one day soon. The family would like to give special thanks to the caregivers from Harmony House, Lib and Kelly, who took such good care of him these last few months.
Funeral Services were held at the Springville Stake Center, 245 S. 600 E., Springville, Utah Sat., April 17.
