Death Takes Pioneer Doctor, N.D. Riddle

Norwood C. Riddle, M.D., 82, pioneer Darrington physician, died February 1 in an Arlington hospital.

Dr. Riddle was born Dec 13, 1890 in Jonesboro, N.C., and attended the University of North Carolina for his pre-medical degree. He was graduated from Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia in 1919 and interned in New York City.

He practiced in Muhlenberg Hospital, Plainfield, N.J. and in 1922 went to Peru where he spent four years. From 1926 to 1929 he did studies in Orthopedic Surgery at Shrine's Hospital, Chicago and at other hospitals and clinics in the East.

He came to Darrington where he practiced actively until 1971 when he retired. He has practiced inactively since.

He was a member of the Christian Church of Jonesboro, N.C., the American Physicians Association, was a Veteran of World War I, a member of the Darrington Chamber of Commerce and the Veterans of World War I.

He was a lifetime member of the Roof of the World Lodge 1094 A.F. and A.M., La Oroya, Peru, South America.

In June 1969 he was honored by the Alumni Association of Jefferson Medical College with a certificate and 50 year pin for his faithful medical service in the traditional ideals of the medical profession. He was a member of the Snohomish County Medical Association and was honored by them in 1969 for 50 years of faithful service.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Barbara J Grimm in 1960.

He is survived by his wife, Carol at home, two daughters, Miss Charlotte E. Riddle of Everett and Mrs. Bette Thompson of Troutdale, Oregon, 5 grandchildren, Robert & Debbie at the family home, Randy, Sue and Jill Thompson; and one sister, Mrs. Mayme Watson in Sanford, N.C.

Services were held Monday morning at 10 am in the First Baptist Church in Darrington. The Reverend Paul Poehlman and the Reverend Alvin Aosved officiated. Interment was in the family plot in Arlington Cemetery.

Honorary cast bearers were Ben Meyers, Ward Woodward, Roger Boyd, Vera Pagels, Merle Boehmer, Frank Lock, Clyde Lewis, David Faulkner, Eldon Abbott, Bob Hiltod, Wally Dowdle and Maurice Vincent.

Active bearers were Troy Davis, Arnold Natons, Bill Bryson, Geroge Slatton, Dr. Marvin West and Dan Ryals.
