Anah Yates was the first person to exhaustively research Rochester city and Monroe County history in records and archives. Her newspaper column, "Rochester Family Records", which appeared in the Post Express from 1910 to 1913, documented area history from its earliest days through civic, church and cemetery records. She was also the first person to actually go out in the field to the smaller area cemeteries and transcribe the tombstones. One hundred years on, with many of these cemeteries damaged or even lost, her transcription work has preserved the information for future generations and in some cases provides the only known records. Her papers included death and marriage records, church records, fraternal and society archives and papers and cemetery transcriptions, lot and owner maps which she drew up herself. Her work has also been informally recycled into a user-friendly online database for Rochester history and genealogy.

Mrs. Yates was one of the founders of the Rochester Historical Society, and a state genealogist of the New York Historical Society for many years. She was also an active member of the Daughters of the American Revolution.
