Darrel S. "Brownie" Brown, 80, of Mount Pleasant died Monday, Feb. 13, 2012, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City after a lengthy illness.
Born July 12, 1931, in Scottsbluff, Neb., he was the son of Byron Arden and Alta Mae Thurman Brown. On Jan. 29, 1950, he married Mary Ann Smith in Iowa Falls.
Mr. Brown began work for Hy-Vee in 1957. He worked at stores in Ames and Corydon and retired as meat market manager in the Mount Pleasant store, where he worked from 1961 to 1991. He lived in Banner County, Neb. ,and moved to Iowa Falls in 1947, graduated from Iowa Falls High School in 1949. He began work as a meat cutter at a local grocery store.
He was a member of St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Mount Pleasant, where he served on the first parish council and was a past chairman of St. Alphonsus Old Threshers steering committee. He was a charter member of Knights of Columbus Council 7294. He served on the board of directors of Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club in the 1970s, and was president of Mount Pleasant Goal Line Club, now Mount Pleasant Community High School Athletic Booster Club.
He enjoyed golfing, time with family, winter vacationing in New Braunfels, Texas, and morning coffee with friends at Dickey's in Mount Pleasant. He worked part-time in the summer during retirement as assistant greens-keeper at Mount Pleasant Golf and Country Club.
Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Becky Zickefoose of What Cheer; four sons, Stephen Brown of Lockport, Ill., Marty Brown of Mount Pleasant, Michael Brown of Comfort, Texas, and Scott Brown of Cumming, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.
Burial will be in St. Alphonsus Catholic Cemetery.
