John Smith Stewart, C.M.G., D.S.O., Croix de guerre, D.D.S. served as a member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta (Conservative Party) from 1911 to 1925 and as a Member of Parliament for the Canadian House of Commons in the Lethbridge riding from 1930 to 1935. He was a Brigadier-General for the 3rd Canadian Division from 1917 until 1919 Canadian Expeditionary Force; WWI Awarded the Distinguished Service Order and the Croix de Guerre; Boer War (1899 to 1902) Awarded the Queen's Medal with four Clasps; 4th Artillery Brigade, Canadian Expeditionary Force - served overseas in France (Commander); 7th Artillery Brigade, Canadian Expeditionary Force - served overseas in France (Commander) Royal Canadian Legion General Stewart Branch No. 4 In 1951 in honour of Brigadier-General John Smith Stewart, CMG, DSO, ED, distinguished Lethbridge soldier and Statesman, the name "The Legion" was changed to The General Stewart Branch No. 4 Canadian Legion British Empire Service League.
