He was born in Altenburg, Thuringia Germany where he had become a radical leader during the uprisings of 1848. He had written many articles on the revolution and was imprisoned for one year. After his imprisonment he then immigrated to America. He had lived in Hoboken, New Jersey and was the director of the German School and a editor of the New York Democrat. He had founded schools and wrote many kindergarten manuals and educational textbooks. His political views always remained socialistic and he wrote novels and political studies over thirty five titles in all. He was one of the first men in America who was against slavery. In 1855 while living in Texas his german views to salvary caused his newspaper press to be destroyed. During the Civil War his German American Patriotism lead germans to fight for a cause they truley believed in. He died in Brooklyn and his body was cremated together with his wife who died ten years later, their ashes were placed in a niche at Fresh Pond.
