He was a teacher to the firm’s next generation of lawyers and any attorney who grew up under his guidance never lost the habit of memorializing every telephone call or conference with a written note that served as insurance against future confusion or uncertainty.
His legal masterpiece was the creation, maintenance and eventual sale of the City Transit Company. He was a member of the board of trustees of Miami Valley Hospital for forty-six years. He gave them free legal guidance and led a fundraising campaign for its main facility. He was a founding trustee and past-president of Hospital Care Corporation, which later became Blue Cross Corporation of Southwest Ohio, the first pre-paid heath care plan in the region. For many years he was a trustee of the Dayton Art Institute and the Dayton Philharmonic Orchestra Association; he was a generous benefactor of the Dayton Museum of Natural History; he was a director of the Dayton Power and Light Company.
While he helped put Dayton on the map, he and his wife traveled to almost every place in the world. His eightieth year found them in China; his eighty-second in Burma.
