Birge, Chester A., leading furniture dealer and undertaker of Hart, Oceana Co., Michigan, was born in Brighton, Michigan Feb. 16, 1857. He received a good common school education, and when fifteen years of age "struck out for himself." Going to Chicago he was employed three years in a dry goods store; he then came to Grand Rapids and secured employment at Berkey and Gay's in the upholstering department, for eight years, after which he conducted business for himself in that place and Chicago until 1894, when he came to Hart and opened his present store. He has a large and extensive line of beautiful furniture, and in connection does upholstering. He also does embalming and undertaking, have a hearse and taking charge of funerals. Mr. Birge was married June 14, 1883, to Miss Sarah Brewer, of Grand Rapids. They have one daughter, Ruth. *this article was found on page 7 of the "1895 Oceana County Atlas"
