He was discharged for promotion on 6/30/1863 and commissioned into Field & Staff MN 7th Infantry as the Asst Surgeon. He was Mustered Out on 8/16/1865 at Fort Snelling, MN.

Brewer Mattocks graduated from Philadelphia College of Pharmacy in 1861. While serving in the army he attended the St. Louis Medical College, receiving a degree in 1864. After the Civil War he established his medical practice in St. Paul and later in Faribault, Minnesota, Edgewood, Pennsylvania and Rhinelander, Wisconsin. After retirement he moved to the Minnesota Soldiers Home.
