He was known as "Little Boy Blue," as detailed in the "Readers Digest" 1987 edition. He was the son of Eli Stutzman.

Stutzman's son, Danny, was found on Christmas Eve in a ditch in tiny Chester, Nebraska in 1985. Wearing a blue blanket sleeper, the unknown child was called "Little Boy Blue" and buried by the townspeople of Chester and Hebron. A couple years later, it was discovered that Danny was the son of a former Ohio Amishman, Eli Stutzman. Stutzman was on the run from Texas for murdering his roommate, Glen Pritchett.

Easter Basket, Flowers Mark The Grave Of "Little Boy Blue"

Salina, Kansas ----- After their weekend visit to Chester, Neb., Alfred Miller and his wife knew that the community hadn't forgotten the mysterious death of the 9-year-old boy who had been the Miller' neighbor in their northern Ohio Amish settlement.

They saw the Easter basket, flowers and toys left on Danny Stutzman's grave in Chester.

"IT was very touching," said Miller's wife.

Easter weekend about two years after the people of Chester buried Danny, the Millers traveled to Chester by bus from their home in Apple Creek, Ohio, to visit Danny's grave just north of the Kansas border.

Accompanying them were Miller's brother and his wife, retired farmers also of Apple Creek. The arrived in Salina late Saturday and planned to continue toward Chester on the next bus to Belleville. But no bus was scheduled to run that night, so they had no place to go and no place to stay.

Ed Heslip, a dealer at the North Santa Fe Flea Market offed to take then to Chester Saturday night.

"They were going to take the bus to Belleville and then walk to Chester," he said. "They didn't have any place to stay. So I offered to take them and helped them find lodging at a truck stop."

Heslip drove back to Chester Sunday then back to Salina so they could catch a bus for Apple Creek.

In Chester, they spent about an hour at Danny's grave early Sunday morning, Miller said. They then walked about two miles to the place where Danny's body was found near a dirt road. They later attended Easter Sunday services at the church that had conducted Danny's funeral.

All the while, they speculated on the cause of Danny's death and why his body was left abandoned in a ditch in the freezing cold, Miller said.

Danny's body was found a few days before Christmas 1986 near a deserted country road about two miles northeast of Chester. The body showed no sign of violence and investigators were unable to determine the cause of death. Danny was never reported missing and officials were unable to identify him.

Because he was found wrapped in a blue blanket, the people of Chester named him the "Little Boy Blue."

Moved by the tragic and mysterious death of the child, a church in Chester conducted a funeral for him the following Easter. A local cemetery donated a plot, and a casket, vault and grave marker were donated.

Danny's mother, who was five months pregnant, died in a barn fire when he was a toddler, Miller said. Danny's father, Eli Stutzman, said she died after going into the burning building to save some milk pails, miller said.

When Danny was about 2 years old, he and his father left the community for Wyoming. Although his grandparents would have taken care of him, they didn't know Eli was taking Danny with him until he was gone, Miller said.
