Miss J. Maud Nellis

Miss J. Maud Nellis, former Elk Creek postmaster, died Saturday morning in Coger Nursing Home at Schenevus.

She was born in Schenevus, Oct. 28, 1868, daughter of George and Martha (Chase) nellis. when she was seven, the family moved to Elk Creek where she lived until she recently suffered a fall in which her hip was broken.

She began her postoffice career in 1885 as assistant to her father, who was named postmaster by President Grover Cleveland. In a succeeding change in administration, she continued as assistant to Thomas Patrick, who was named to succeed her father.

In 1904, she was named postmaster, a post she held until her retirement in January, 1940. In addition to her postoffice work, she operated a store.

She was a member of the Methodist Church and he Grange, from which she had received her 50 year membership certificate.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Mrs. Grace Nellis, Ossining; a brother-in-law, Ira D. Tipple, Schenevus; two nieces, Mildred Nellis Barrett, Ossining and Frances Tipple banker, Schenevus.

Funeral was at Tillapaugh Funeral home at 1 p.m. Monday. The Rev. Lynn Brown, pastor of the methodist church officiated. Burial was in Elk Creek cemetery.
