Born in Pittsylvania County, he was the son of the late Joshua Caleb Mitchell and Maude Annie Wells Mitchell.
He lived most of his life in the Mount Cross Community, and retired in 1970 after 40 years of service with Dan River Mills in Danville.
He was a member of Bethel Baptist Church and the Dan River Retired Workers Club.
On August 16, 1927, he married Bessie Mae Hutcherson, who predeceased him.
Survivors include two daughters Joyce Marie Mitchell Harper of Danville and Judith Mitchell Martin of Salisbury, NC, four sons Carlton E Mitchell, Jerry Franklin Mitchell and Joshua Calvin Mitchell of Danville and Landon R Mitchell of Providence, NC, one sister Eva Mitchell Roberts of Danville, three brothers Grover Allen Mitchell of Danville, Clyde Edward Mitchell of Reidsville, NC and George Edgar Mitchell of Altavista, VA, eight grandchildren and one great grandson.
Funeral services were conducted at Swicegood Funeral Home Chapel in Danville by Reverend Gilbert Hawks.
Burial was in the Wells Cemetery in Hinesville, VA.
