Hazel D. Owens, 97 of Pace, FL passed away Sunday, June 26, 2005, at her home.

Hazel was born May 28, 1908, in Gadsden, AL to the late Thomas R. Smith and Luanna Adair Smith. After finishing high school at Adult High, she married Guy Owens in 1923. She was a charter member of First Advent Christian Church in Gadsden. She resided in Pensacola for the last 20 years and attended East Brent Baptist Church faithfully for as long as she was able.

Hazel was preceded in death by her husband of 74 years, Guy Owens, Sr.; sons, Guy Owens, Jr. and Marvin "Bob" Owens; four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

She is survived by a son, Merlin Owens of Gadsden, AL; daughters, Ruth Roberts of Ashville, AL, Virginai Zatkoff of Indianapolis, IN, Marguerite Bedsole of Calera, AL and Elaine Allen of Pace; daughters-in-law, Sue, Barbara and Vera; 24 grandchildren, 56 great-grandchildren and 18 great-great-grandchildren. The last seven years, Hazel has lived with and been cared for by Elaine and Pearl Allen.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 29, 2005, at East Brent Baptist Church with Dr. Dale Patterson officiating. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.

Additional services will be held in Gadsden on Friday, July 1, 2005, at 11:00 a.m. at the Collier-Butler Funeral Home with visitation on Thursday evening, June 30, 2005, at the funeral home from 6:00 - 8:00 p.m.

Interment will follow at the Forest Cemetery in Gadsden, AL.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.
