He was the grandson of William & Susannah Martin Adams and the son of Moses Adams. His mother's name might have been Elizabeth Horn. On May 17, 1811, he wed Mary Francis Phillips. They had ten children, nine of whom were shown living with them in the South Division of Surry County on the 1850 US Census. On the 1860 US Census, John is living with his second wife, Dorothy Hobson, a widow, and her two youngest children. Meanwhile three of John's oldest children are living with their youngest brother, George Davis Phillips (GDP) Adams. John & Dorothy migrated to Appanoose County, Iowa. On the 1870 Census they were living there with Dorothy's daughter, Martha Jane and her husband Abraham Reece. John's death is recorded in the family bible of his son, GDP Adams.
