ROY GUS SHEPHERD
Roy Gus Shepherd, 92, of the Swiss Community, passed away Wednesday, May 13, 2015, at his home. A native of Yancey County, he was a son of the late Isaac Garfield and Minnie Buckner Shepherd. He was also preceded in death by sisters: Lillie Shepherd Ponder, Edith Shepherd, and Margaret Shepherd Ballard; and brothers: Gaither Levi Shepherd, Willard “Bill” Garrett Shepherd and Auburn Charles Shepherd. Gus was a US Army World War II veteran, having served as a Radar Technician. He was a retired farmer.
Surviving are his nephews: Roy Gus Ballard and wife, Nancy, of Mars Hill, Roger Shepherd and wife, Julia, of Burnsville, Vernon Quince Shepherd and wife, Della, of Ohio and William Bill Ballard of Weaverville; nieces: Annie Mae Fox of Burnsville, Jean Robinson of Mars Hill, Elezene Brown and Mildred Ray of Weaverville and Gwin Dola Burleson of Tennessee.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Sunday in the Chapel of Holcombe Brothers Funeral Home. Rev. Denver Styles will officiate. Burial will be in the W. R. Buckner Cemetery on Windy Gap Road with military graverites by Sgt. E. L. Randolph Chapter 57, DAV.
Pallbearers will be Jeff Ballard, Roger and Charlie Shepherd, Bobby Mathis, and Donald and Chris Buckner.
The family will receive friends 1 hour prior to the service at the funeral home.
