Retired Merchant Dies Sunday of Heart Attack

James Garfield Samples, 69, retired merchant and farmer of Alexander, died at his home Sunday morning at 8 o'clock of a heart attack. He had been ill only a short time, suffering with a cold.

Mr. Samples was born Oct. 7, 1882, a son of Amos and Susan Vincent Samples. He first married Effie Buckhannon [correction: Buchanan], who is deceased.

Children from this marriage surviving are: Marion Samples, Arlington; Mrs. Lydia Coe, Mrs. Eula Channel, and Bryan Samples, of Alexander; Jay Samples, Alton; Miss Geneva Samples, Dupont, Md.[correction: Mrs. Geneva Dupont, of Md.]; Miss Garnet Samples [correction: Mr. Garnet Samples], Ambridge, Pa; Mrs. Adele Harman, Haul Samples, Mrs. Maxine Miller, and Eli Samples, all of Ohio. His second wife, Mrs. Cettie Andrews Samples, survives.

Brothers and sisters living are: Amos Samples, Crawford Route 1; Clell Samples, Weston; Mrs. Roxie Hunt, Charleston; Mrs Blanche Alderson [correction: Alderman], Alexander; Mrs. Della Mick, Clendenin; Mrs. Mintie Buckhannon [correction: Mrs. Minnie Buchanan], Buckhannon; Mrs. Jennie Lunceford, and Mrs. Maude Hunt, Wheeler; and Mrs. Georgie Cutlip, Weston.

Funeral services were held at the Heaston Methodist Church Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock with the Rev. William Keller, of Selbyville, and the Rev. Mr. Collins, of Tyler County, officating. Graveside services were conducted by the Rock Cave Masonic Lodge No. 81, and burial was made in the church cemetery. Mr. Samples was a member of the United Brethren Church.
