Arthur N. "Shun" Pardee, 93, Rochester Mills, died Friday, Feb. 17, 2012, at Crystal Waters in Rayne Twp., Indiana County.

He was born Oct. 22, 1918, in Rochester Mills, the son of the late Norman and Mary (Smith) Pardee.

June 19, 1943, he married Goldie (Ryen) Pardee, who survives, of Rochester Mills. They shared almost 69 years of marriage.

Mr. Pardee served overseas in the U.S. Army during World War II, where he participated in the D-Day Invasion at Omaha Beach. He was awarded the EAME Theater ribbon with five bronze stars. As a sergeant, he later was called back by the U.S. Army to train troops during the Korean Conflict.

At the age of 62, Mr. Pardee retired from PennDOT after working as a line painter for many years. Prior to entering the military, he had owned and operated coal mines.

Mr. Pardee was a member of the Punxsutawney American Legion Post No. 62 and the Rochester Mills Rod and Gun Club. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.

He also enjoyed telling tall tales and was well known for his keen sense of humor.

In addition to his wife, surviving relatives include three children, Phyllis Pardee of Indiana, Sharon Burns and husband Ed of Marion Center and Dick Pardee and wife Denise of Rochester Mills; five grandchildren, Lisa Kromer, Brian Burns and wife Stephanie, Kelly McCurdy and husband Rick, Amy Cook and husband Eric, and Angela Schultz and husband Jason; six great-grandchildren, Chase Kromer, Landon and Adelyn Cook, Kinley McCurdy and Charlotte and Evelyn Schultz.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a grandson, Michael Knappenberger; four brothers, Howard, Delbert, Lloyd and Bob Pardee; and a sister, Rose Brown.

Mr. Pardee's funeral will occur at the same time as the funeral service of his sister-in-law, E. June Ryen.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Rairigh Funeral Home, Ltd., Hillsdale, with Pastor Greg Golden officiating.

A cemetery committal service with military honors will follow at Pine Grove Cemetery in Rochester Mills.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be forwarded to the VNA Hospice of Indiana County, 1365 Wayne Ave., Suite 303, Indiana, Pa. 15701.
