Sioux Valley News, 24 August 1899: Died Sunday, August 20, 1899, at 5:15 p.m. of old age, John W. Sargent. He was more than 84 years old and for the past two years has been a well-known figure as he sat on sunny days in his easy chair in front of his home. About six weeks ago he fell while walking near the house and never recovered from the shock. Although there was some bronchial trouble and he was lame because of a rheumatic attack, it seems right to attribute his death to the lowering of vitality and old age. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at the Methodist Church with Rev. Cole officiating. Interment took place in Ridge Cemetery where other members of his family are buried. John W. Sargent was born in Exeter, Maine, March 19, 1815. He was married in 1837 to Abagail Clark who died in 1843, leaving two children, Mary Ellen and Joseph L., who survive their father. In 1846 he married Miss Sarah Cole who with her six children still lives. When 38 years of age he moved to Dodgeville, Wisconsin, where he lived three years and then moved to Minnesota. In 1870 he came to Iowa and for 30 years had been a familiar figure in Union township. After farming twelve years he moved to town and opened a feed store until June 1891 when he lost everything in the great fire. He was a member of the Methodist Church.
