She was born July 28, 1927 at home in Brock, Ohio, the fifth child of a family of six to a farmer, William and Cora (Oliver) Brandt.
She graduated from Versailles High School and then went on to Dayton to typing school where she sharpened her stenography, typing, and short hand skills. Her first job was at Wright Patterson Air Force Base where she worked her way up to working for a General. She met her future husband Raymond Althoff, also a Versailles graduate, who at the same time was working for Inland Manufacturing. They married in 1950 and a few short years later, had their only child. Betty is survived by daughter Cathy and husband Doug Spilker, of Blue Springs, Mo.; their children Maria and Nathaniel, and daughter-in-law, Tara.
Raymond preceded Betty in death in 2006. Betty and Ray were members of Emanuel Lutheran Church in Phillipsburg for over 50 years.
After retiring from the Northmont School district as an administrative secretary, Betty became the volunteer secretary at the church office. She will be missed by her family, her church, and the many who knew her.
A funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, October 24, at Hale-Sarver Family Funeral Home, 284 N. Miami St., West Milton, with Rev. Todd Mills officiating. Burial will follow in Brock Cemetery, Darke County. Visitation will be from 12-1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
