"John Bradley married Mary Turnage on July 16, 1879 (Nevada county marriage records). She died in childbirth of thier first child. John then married Elizabeth Jane "Betty Carter, and had 9 children. According to a letter written by William John Carter on July 15, 1880 to his son: G. L. Turnage's daughter (Mary) married a (John) Bradley and when she was to be confined, she went into convulsions and died. Mary and the baby were buried at Ebenezer Cemetery near the rest of the Turnage family. Elizabeth Jane Carter Bradley is buried at Bluff City Cemetery and John B. is buried at Ebenezer by his first wife. John served in the 3rd US Cavalry, US, and camped with his unit in the Ebenezer Cemetery during the Arkansas Expedition of the Red River Campaign on the night of April 13, 1864. John later returned to the area and married Mary Turnage as stated above. John kept his identity secret after the war to avoid any retribution for his service in the Union army. His secret was shared with T. J. Clingan and a few others in the area. John's daughter Celia married Lealus Harrison Walthall. John's son married Lula DeWoody and thier daughter Myrtis married Roy Baxter Clingan. Lealus was also priveleged to the information. Myrtis is my grandmother. When I asked her directly about the information, she concurred that John was in fact a Union soldier. Leslie Walthall, son of Lealus and Celia also confirmed John Bradley's identity. Leslie stated that on Lealus' deathbed he shared the information on John having been a Union soldier but could not recall the unit; but did state that John's unit had encamped at Ebenezer."
