Longtime resident of Valley Center, Pat Barrett, died on Saturday, October 10, 2009, after an unfortunate accident occurred earlier in the week while Pat was doing what he loved, working with horses.

Pat was born September 13, 1937, in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, to Patrick and Lucy Barrett. He served in the United States Navy from 1955 to 1962. Pat's work as a farrier for over 45 years took him to wherever people had horses. His big smile, jovial manner, larger than life personality, crazy jokes and can-do attitude made him known and loved far and wide throughout San Diego County.

Pat's love of horses extended to his free time, as he was a member of and rode with the Escondido Mounted Posse for over 15 years; during that time he held the most senior position of Captain for two years. He was an active member of the St. Steven Catholic Church in Valley Center and was a tireless worker in the Knights of Columbus, a Catholic fraternal service organization. He was a past Grand Knight and over the years was instrumental in organizing countless community benefits.

Pat and, the love of his life, Nancy, moved to Valley Center in 1973 where, in addition to his farrier business, they bred and sold Arabian horses and sold antiques at their ranch, Barrett's Arabians and Antiques.

Pat will forever be remembered by his loving wife, Nancy; his much-loved six kids, Pat Simpson, Susan Simpson, Skip Barrett, Laura Hanson, Becky Tenges, and Sean Barrett and each of their spouses; and his treasured grandchildren; along with countless other friends, clients, business acquaintances, and brother Knights who were blessed to know him.

Friends, brother Knights, St. Stephen parishioners and acquaintances are invited to join the family at St. Stephen Church, 31020 Cole Grade Rd, Valley Center, for the following events to celebrate Pat's life.

A Rosary and memorial will be held on Thursday, Oct 15 2009, at 6 pm. A funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, Oct 17 at 10 am. After the Mass, a reception to celebrate Pat Barrett's life will begin at approximately 11:30 am, following a private burial ceremony. The family wishes to thank the emergency workers, helicopter pilots, doctors, nurses and staff at Scripps Memorial Trauma Center for their heroic efforts to save Pat's life.

In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that Pat Barrett's memory be honored through a cause he championed -- the education of our youth. Pat, via his Knights of Columbus affiliation, was the prime fund raiser for annual scholarships awarded to Valley Center high school graduates. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be sent to: Pat Barrett Memorial Scholarship, c/o Knights of Columbus, P.O. Box 1461, Valley Center, Calif. 92082.
