Adelaide "Addie" Rebecca Brown was the only child of Rufus Merton Brown and Elizabeth Flood, who married on New Year's Day in 1857 in Marshall County, Indiana. They welcomed Addie on 2 Jan 1859. The three of them appeared together on the 1860 Census, living in Plymouth, near Merton's parents Rufus and Nancy Brown. Merton was working as clerk somewhere.

Addie's grandfather Rufus Sr. died in 1860 at age 50.

Tragically, Addie suffered the loss of both parents before she was 11 years old. First her mother Elizabeth died in 1862 at age 30. Her father Merton died eight years after that in 1870 at age 33.

Addie's widowed grandmother Nancy, aged 57, appeared on an 1870 Census record, living in Center Township, Plymouth with 27-year-old Mary Brown (born in Ohio) and 2-year-old Albert Brown. Also with them was 11-year-old Addie, who had just lost her father earlier that year. It is unclear what, if any, relationship existed between Nancy Brown and Mary Brown.

Nancy, aged 66, and Addie, aged 21, were still together when the 1880 Census was taken. They had relocated to Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana. Addie had finished college and found a job teaching school.

A year after that census, Addie's grandmother Nancy died at age 69, and Addie had her laid to rest next to husband Rufus and Addie's father Merton and mother Elizabeth.

While still in Terre Haute, Addie met Sister Mary Cajetan (nee Mary Foley 30 Sep 1855 CT), assoiciated with the Sisters of Providence in Saint Mary of the Woods near Terre Haute. They would spend their next 65 years together.

By 1904, Addie and Mary were in Covina, Los Angeles Co., California, where both had procured teaching jobs. Addie was either at Floyd Valdez Covina H.S. or Floyd M. Stork School. Mary was teaching grammar school. They were in Covina until about 1921 when they moved to Los Angeles.

By the 1940 Census, Addie, aged 81, and Mary, aged 85, owned a home at 537 Lucerne Blvd. in L.A. Sadly, Mary died the year after that census on 2 Jun 1941. She was laid to rest in the cemetery at St. Mary of the Woods in Terre Haute, Indiana.

Addie lived another six years, dying on 1 Dec 1947. She was buried in Los Angeles, which explains why her death date was never engraved on the family's headstone. Bio provided by contributor Kim White.
