Garon Adam is my husbands 3rd Great Grandfather.
Buried in Adam Private Cemetery located SW Washington Township Sec. 36-12-9. Listed as Garon W Adam born 1830 died 1882
Garon walked from Pennsylvania to Ohio using a compass. He met his wife Catherine Greulich in St Louis MO where she worked in a hotel. They went from there to Westport MO by covered wagon. The house sat high on a hill. There was no way to the house but to walk up. So they cut steps out in the side of the hill. During this time 5 children were born and all 5 died. It's not known if it was from the hardships of traveling in the covered wagon or from the cholera epidemic of the 1860's. From here they moved on to Alma KS. They had 13 children, the first 5 died (possibly in the cholera epidemic of 1860).
Approximately February 1865 they were robbed by Jessie James . Jessie made Garon and a neighbor, who was spending the night go out and hold his horses while they searched the house, they only got $0.35. When they came out of the house Jessie said "Prisoners ahead" and made Garon and the friend march. Garon thought they were going to kill him anyway so he fell over to the side of the road and hid in some bushes and they left him. His money was hidden in the table legs or bedposts. Catherine was expecting Mary at this time.
Garon took his son Joe hunting with him to Alma, six miles away. When he left he told Catherine to take good care of little Feronica (Flora). After they walked a while he gave Joe a note and sent him back to a neighbors. Garon went behind a tree and shot himself. The note told where to find him. He gave no reason for his actions.
