DEATH OF MRS. PRATT
Was One of the Real Pioneers of Portage County
The death of Mrs. Jehial F. Pratt, which occurred on Thursday, Aug. 31, on the old homestead in the town of Pine Grove, where she had lived for more than half a century, marked the passing of one of the county's real pioneers. Mary W. Horton was born at Bath, Steuben county, NY, May 9, 1835. The family moved from Bath to Rutland, PA, and at the latter place, on January 1, 1855, she was united in marriage to Jehial F. Pratt. In June of the same year the young couple came to the state of Wisconsin, which was then only seven years old, and settled on eighty acres of land in the town of Pine Grove, this eighty acre tract forming part of the homestead on which her long and useful life, with the exception of five years in Pennsylvania, was spent.
She lived at this home continuously since 1865. Early in life she united with the Methodist church and had always led a consistent Christian life. During her last illness, which extended over a period of four years and four months, she bore her suffering with great courage, being always submissive to the Masters will.
Mr. Pratt died Dec. 31. 1904, but she is survived by five sons and two daughters. They are Frank J., Daniel H., and Arthur W., of Plainfield, WI, Martin L. and Charles A. of Powell, Wyoming, and Mrs. Leafie Walker and Lida M. Pratt of Plainfield: also by seven grand children, and a brother and sister. The latter are Daniel H. Horton of Elmira , NY, and Mrs. Asneath Kennedy of Rutland , Tioga county, PA.
The funeral was held from the family home on Sunday. Sept. 1. The bearers were the four sons, Frank, Daniel, Arthur and Charles, and A. J. Walker, son-in-law, and Walter Horton, a nephew. The floral offerings were many and beautiful.
