Irvin worked a variety of jobs, mostly as an accountant. He wound up separated from his wife and son and lived with a couple in Los Angeles in 1932.

He was accused of, and convicted of, murdering Edwin Clarke and Kandace Clarke in the couple's home on July 4, 1932. He served about 10 years for the double murder in San Quentin State Prison and was paroled on Feb 6, 1942.
