Hugh Cunningham was captain of the Talladega Company in the First Alabama Volunteers, organized at Mobile in June 1846 for twelve months service in the War with Mexico. The regiment entered service with 900 soldiers; 200 were discharged, 150 died of disease, and one was killed in action. The regiment participated in the siege of Vera Cruz, and were mustered out of service on May 25, 1847.
