Realtor, developer and businessman. McCarty once owned one fourth of all land in Beverly Hills, California. He was one of the first subdividers of that area and was the builder of the Beverly Wilshire Hotel in 1928, where he lived until his death. It was originally built as an 'apartment-hotel'. He also was the developer of over 50 subdivisions in and around the Los Angeles area. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Hollywood Park Race Track, one of the original stockholders and the first president of it's Turf Club. He also operated a horse farm in Chatsworth where he was the breeder of many champion thoroughbreds. Many prominent figures in the entertainment & turf worlds were in attendance at his funeral, including Joe E. Brown, Mervyn Leroy, Jimmy Stewart, Leo Carrillo, Jack Haley and the Los Angeles County Sheriff Gene Biscailuz. There were 75 honorary pallbearers. McCarty Drive in the city of Beverly Hills is named for him. It is near the Beverly Wilshire Hotel.
