He was baptized in March 1831 by his father at Lamington Presbyterian Church. In 1849, with 99 others, he bought the bark "Stafford" and sailed from NYC to California to take part in the Gold Rush. He later was with the firm of D. O. Mills & Co. in Sacramento. By 1863, he was in Virginia City, where he established himself with an associate in a firm of bankers and brokers, the firm being named Arnold and Blauvelt. William married Anna Gertrude Adams at Grace Church, San Francisco, in September 1867. He remained in business in Virginia City and became its oldest living citizen. His wife and son moved to New York City where she died 23 February 1923.

They had two children, Emma Laura Blauvelt b. 1870 in San Francisco and William Grove Blauvelt b. 1879. Laura married William John Hopkins in 1896.

Blauvelt Was born in Hessen Germany in 1830 He came to America in the 1850's settling in Virginia City Nevada in the mid 1860's were he worked as a Barber & Part time Saloon keeper He died Nov. 1st 1917 at age 87 and was buried in the Virginia City Cemetery. His grave stone has been knocked over & damaged by vandals and in time the Comstock Historical Graves Soc. will repair it. It is hoped that William's ghost haunts the dreams of the dastards who smashed his marker.]
