Ruth "Nell" Blakney of New Home, a beloved mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, and a lady with literal host of friends. She passed away August 12, 2009 following a lengthy period of health problems. Nell was born April 30, 1923 in Idalou, TX to A.J. and Goldie Russell Shadden. Nell was the youngest of four Shadden children. Nell was preceded in death by two sisters, Pauline Smith and Doris Ashcraft; one brother, J.W. Shadden and her parents.

The family moved to New Home when Nell was just a youngster, and she attended public schools there, completing high school in 1941. She married E.R. Blakney, Jr., on January 5, 1940, and two children were born to this union. One daughter, Sharon Ince of Lewisville and a son Max, who is deceased. There are two grandchildren, Taige Becker of Amarillo; Teck Ince of Umbarger; three great-grandchildren, Blake Becker of Amarillo; Garrett Ince of Amarillo; and Bailey Henderson of Lewisville.

In addition to Sharon, Gerald and the grandchildren, Nell is also survived by Joe H. Hodges, her mate and companion for the past sixteen years and diligent care-giver in more recent times. She is also survived by three nieces, Kay Brown and husband Larry of Amarillo; Sandra Nichols and husband Mike of Granbury; and Jan Neal of Tahoka; three nephews, Sam Ashcraft and wife Elaine of Tahoka; Jerry Shadden of Abernathy; and Ken Smith of Haskell.

E.R. and Nell were well known Lynn County farmers, and prior to his untimely death in 1983, Mr. Blakney served as county commissioner of Lynn County. Nell was appointed to complete his term on the Commissioners Court. They were both active in community affairs, particularly in connection with the affairs of the New Home United Methodist Church.

Nell moved to Lubbock in 1985, and was an early homebuilder in the Lakeridge community. She was a traveler and an avid golfer, and was active in the Hillcrest Ladies Golf Association and later had an active role in the Lakeridge Ladies Golf Association.

For the past several years she has been a member of the Lakeridge United Methodist Church in Lubbock.

Graveside services will be held at 9:00 a.m. Saturday, August 15, 2009 at the City of Lubbock Cemetery.
