DEWEYVILLE – Stanley Jay Gardner, 81, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2012 at the Bear River Hospital in Tremonton, Utah.

He was born on May 30, 1930 in Garland, Utah, a son of Martin Milo and Florence Ellen Loveland Gardner.

He graduated from Bear River High School. He is a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and was a member of the Eagles Club, American Legions and Veterans of Foreign Wars. While in the Eagles club, he participated in fund raisers for heart disease, MS, Muscular Dystrophy and cancer. He worked 35 years for the Defense Depot in Ogden and retired in May of 1985.

Stanley served in the Korean War and was part of the May Day, Punch Bowl, and Heartbreak Ridge battles. He was injured at Triangle Ridge battle and then went to the city of Choron. He explained that the only living thing he saw there was a horse that was deaf and a little Korean with hay on his back. Stanley received five battle stars.

Stanley married Thera Shepherd on August 11, 1954. She died on September 1, 2001. He married Doris Mae Azye on January 5, 1999 and she died on June 7, 2007.

Stanley enjoys riding and breaking horses, fishing, hunting, gardening, dancing, helping the grandkids and singing with "The Friendly Band" at Pioneer and Bear River Care Centers. In his life, he has presented 45 flags to widows of deceased veteran's which was the greatest honor of his life and hardest thing to do. Stanley was in the Reserves for eight years and served as Sr. Vice Commander of District 3 Honor Guard in Layton, and was made First Lieutenant.

His children are Crystal Sandberg, Kenneth (Ellen) Gardner, Stan Gardner, Jr. and Lisa Wickham; 11 grandchildren and several great grandchildren and several step children.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two wives, two sons, Martin and Curtis Gardner.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 24, 2012 at 12 Noon at the Deweyville LDS Ward Chapel, 10750 North Highway 38.

A viewing will be held on Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gillies Funeral Chapel, 634 East 200 South, Brigham City, Utah and on Friday at the church from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Interment will be in the Deweyville City Cemetery, where military honors will be accorded by the American Legion and VFW Honor Guard.
